Proposed Ultimo Aquatic Centre

Dear Councillor Lucy Turnbull

As an Ultimo resident and taxpayer, I vehemently object to the removal of sauna and spa facilities from the final proposal of the Ultimo Aquatic Centre.

Both facilities were included in the original plan, much to my delight. However, allegedly due to financial restrictions, they have been removed from the final plan.

May I suggest that if you have to cut costs, alter other facilities such as turning the 50m swimming pool into a 25m pool and/or remove the second pool or aspects of the gym, as most residential complexes in the area already feature a gym.

To your defence you may argue that “Aussies” love swimming. In the so-called multicultural society that we supposedly live in, I am very curious to know who exactly are the “Aussies”. If you care to observe, the areas in and around Ultimo are populated predominantly by Asians, with a few Europeans such as myself and some Anglo-Saxons. As you may be aware, neither the Asians nor the Europeans care much about swimming. This fact leads me to believe that the “Aussies” can only be the Anglo-Saxons. I, therefore, find it extraordinary that in this day and age, in a progressive society such as ours, practices such as this still apply whenever a decision is required, where a handful of Anglo-Saxons have precedence over the majority of the residents!

Furthermore, in a true democratic manner we, the residents, should have given our say before the plan was revised and submitted to the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority for approval.

Yours sincerely
Maria Lopes

Ultimo Aquatic Centre

Dear Lord Mayor and elected Councillors

From the comments tabled at the original display at Customs House, through to the Harry Seidler presentation at Ultimo Community Centre, to the feedback I have been receiving since the 8 September Update – it has always been very clear that the main use of the Ultimo Aquatic Centre for Ultimo/Pyrmont residents is recreational use.

UAC is an all weather alternative to the beach. It needs a recreational and spa pool, as well as the European style sauna, as per Seidler’s presentation. There would not be much use for gym facilities, as they can be provided by UCC. Most of the residential buildings in the area have a gym anyway. There is also little support for the lap pool.

Please reconsider and take these comments on board. After all, community consultation should have made a vital input into the planning of the Ultimo Aquatic Centre, as it will be only accepted by the residents if they’re proud of it.

Proposed Ultimo Aquatic Centre

Dear Lord Mayor and elected Councillors

It has come to my attention from media reports that the proposed Ultimo Aquatic Centre is to be down graded because of cost limitations.

Whilst I am not concerned about the proposal to forgo the gym in the complex, I am surprised to learn that there will not be a recreational pool as planned. To only have a 50 metre lap pool and a hydrotherapy pool seems to me to be very shortsighted. Children will not be encouraged to use a 50 lap pool during the initial stages of their learn to swim programs. A recreation pool with ramp access would be very beneficial to both learn to swim classes for patrons as well as a useful tool for exercise for the more handicapped members of our community. A recreation pool would also free up the lap pool for serious swimmers. I am also surprised to learn that there is no mention of an additional spa pool in the complex. As a regular user of the Cook & Phillip Park Aquatic complex, only having one hydrotherapy pool available is not feasible as its nearly always booked up for various programs. Admittance is not cheap to the C&PP complex, $5.50 I believe, and not having access to a spa after quite often strenuous exercise is both frustrating to patrons and staff who have to deal with their complaints.

Quite frankly I believe we don’t need a state of the art fancy pool – however we do need a functional complex that will satisfy all users’ needs. I request that Council reconsider their decision to forgo a recreation pool and instal a spa utility. C&PP has many faults and Council should learn from that experience. Also I urge Council to ensure that the changing facilities for the Ultimo Aquatic complex are well designed and user friendly – if Council are going to spend a large amount of money for a new pool, they might as well get it right first time around.

I trust you will all take my comments seriously – the local community has been waiting for a pool for many, many years and we want to be proud of that pool when it finally comes to fruition.

Regards
Debra Berryman
