29th of April
Dear Gerald Ganglbauer
I am writing to introduce you to http://www.streetcorner.com.au, a local news and information website, designed to enable the community to “make a difference” in their local area.
Streetcorner has just launched in Eastern Sydney and we cover Eastern Suburbs and Sydney City news on a daily basis so the community can keep informed “as it happens”.
Streetcorner’s core principle however is to encourage and give equal profile to stories posted by the community themselves. In short it is a site with a high degree of community interaction, a site “of the community” not just “for the community”.
Interest groups and individuals can register on the site and publish articles on issues that affect the community. All personal information entered during the registration process is kept private.
In addition to raising profile in the community, some Councils have already registered to the site and are responding to the issues that are surfacing from the community dialogue.
We also welcome community groups using the site to promote events they are holding. This can be done either by posting an article on your event and/or listing the event in the calendar.
Please do not hesitate in contacting me by email on abc@mrn.com.au if you have any questions regarding http://www.streetcorner.com.au or in sending us information on any news or issues you believe we should be covering.
If you have a media distribution list could you please add Streetcorner to your list and email to media@streetcorner.com.au
We also welcome your comments, feedback and suggestions for additions to the site.

Kind regards
Angela Clark

Subject: CBD Metro Community Information Sessions

Gerald Ganglbauer
Members of The Ultimo Society

Dear Mr Ganglbauer,
Sydney Metro, the NSW Government agency responsible for the new CBD Metro rail line, is keen to talk with local communities about the project.
In coming weeks, we will be holding Information Sessions at Balmain and Darling Harbour to explain more about the CBD Metro, answer questions and hear what people think.
Everyone is welcome to attend the sessions, at a time that suits them. Please feel free to pass on this invitation to your members - the dates and venues for the Information Sessions are attached.
By way of background, the CBD Metro will operate into, and across the City, from late 2015. It will be seven kilometres long, with six underground stations at Central, Town Hall Square, Martin Place, Barangaroo-Wynyard, Pyrmont and Rozelle. This line will be the enabler to create a future metro network for Sydney.
The project is now in a detailed planning phase. The Project Application and Preliminary Environmental Assessment were recently lodged with the NSW Department of Planning. These documents and a lot of other information, is available on the Sydney Metro website, www.sydneymetro.nsw.gov.au
I look forward to meeting you at the Information Sessions.

Matt Laffan RIP

It is with great sadness that we bring you this news - Matt Laffan passed away on Sunday 1st March 2009 after several weeks battling health complications.

"I don't regard myself as being a little guy and after people are in my company for a time they don't seem to have that thought either."
Matt Laffan - Interview on 'Enough Rope' with Andrew Denton, March 2004

"And I think the major point of destiny for me, in my own small way, is hopefully the kinetic energy I might pass on to others. So my own story might be a fairly simple one in the end, but if it rubs off on other people - those who've been close to me or those who've just come across me - and they go on to do greater and bigger things, well, that's a destiny in itself, which I believe in. I believe in that."

NSW Community Climate Summit

From: Faith Flanigan <fflanigan@nccnsw.org.au>

Subject: Invite to register for the NSW Community Climate Summit

Dear Gerald Ganglbauer
The Nature Conservation Council of NSW invites you to have your say on climate change at the NSW Community Climate Summit from 19-21 February 2009 in Sydney.

The first of its kind in NSW, the summit will provide an opportunity for everyday Australians to discuss our response to the critical issue of climate change and to make recommendations to the NSW Government. The NSW Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Hon Carmel Tebbutt MP, will open the summit and will receive the community’s recommendations after the event.
Climate change will impact on all Australians, now and in the future. It is therefore vital that we hear from a diverse and representative mix of everyday citizens in considering our response to the challenge of climate change.
We want to hear your views
We would like to invite staff and members of your society to register for the NSW Community Climate Summit.
You do not need to be well informed on the issue of climate change to participate. Expert speakers and facilitators will be provided to support participation, as well as preparatory resources.
Attached is an email invitation we kindly ask you to distribute within your society and to your members, and a poster which you may have a place for! Also attached is a short article on the summit which may be appropriate for inclusion in one of your upcoming newsletters or publications.
Please help us spread the word
We’d like to give as many people as possible in the NSW community an opportunity to attend the summit, so we’d be most appreciative if you could also encourage your staff and members to send on the email invitation, poster and short [or long] article to their professional and personal networks, and friends and family!
For further information please contact Faith Flanigan at climatesummit@nccnsw.org.au or on 02 9279 2466.
Now, more than ever, it is imperative that the voice of the community guides government decision making on the critical issue of climate change. Thank you for assisting us in promoting this very important community event and best wishes for the festive season.

Kind regards,
Faith

Dear Member
Time flies! The Ultimo Society has already been online for five years! True, our 250 members strong residents network had seen busier days, but not much news from the precinct is probably just a sign that there are no local issues that need to be addressed.
Meanwhile, Parkinson's NSW new Ultimo Support Group www.gangart.com/usg held monthly meetings at UCC, and Free Beach Action NSW www.gangart.com/freebeach is still lobbying for a free beach in Sydney, with Clover Moore's support.
As a Director of the World Federation of Austrians Abroad, I was travelling frequently to attend meetings in Europe, and earlier this year I became the first Sydney Ambassador for InterNations, an exciting new network for expats and global minds.
So, even though I'm running much slower, I'm still running! And remember: "This space is dedicated to the Ultimo community to air opinions and concerns..." Make good use of our 16000+ readers.
I wish you safe Xmas holidays and a Happy New Year!

World Parkinson's Day

Parkinson's NSWFrom: The Ultimo Society <ultimo@gangart.com>

Subject: World Parkinson's Day

Dear Member
Today is World Parkinson's Day. The perfect day to announce a new Parkinson's NSW Support Group in Ultimo:
There are estimated to be 80,000 Australians living with Parkinson's disease (PD). A diagnosis can occur at any age, with the most common age of diagnosis being 50-60 years. There are no concrete figures available of how many people with Parkinson's (PWP) live in the City of Sydney.
Chris Davis (UTS Sustainability Business Development Manager) and Gerald Ganglbauer (The Ultimo Society) joined forces to launch a new support group in Ultimo, which closes a gap in Parkinson's NSW's existing support network.
Both Chris and Gerald know what is like to be challenged with PD, as they both suffer from the illness.
"When I was diagnosed a couple of years ago at 47, I went into shock; my emotions ranged from denial and disbelief to anger and depression. I wished I had known someone like me in the neighbourhood to talk to face to face," Gerald said.
"Besides raising awareness for Parkinson's in the community, this is the main reason we're launching a new local support group. We invite every PWP in the City West area to join the group!"
There is no cure for Parkinson's disease, however there are a number of effective treatment and therapy options that can help manage symptoms. Nevertheless, the best therapy to share the burden is always a good talk.
The group will meet at the Ultimo Community Centre. To register your details for an invitation, ring PNSW Support Groups Coordinator Trish Morgan on 8875 8903 or e-mail your details to Gerald Ganglbauer at ultimo@gangart.com or subscribe online at the Ultimo Support Group's website www.gangart.com/usg.

Seeking Families for SBS Documentary "The Nest"

From: Fabio Basone <fabio.basone@freehandtv.com.au>
Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 12:19:09 +1100
Subject: SBS Documentary

Hi
I hope you don't mind me getting in touch, I was just wondering if you could help me. I'm a producer for a television production company called Freehand (www.freehandtv.com.au) and we're making an exciting new documentary series for SBS (www.sbs.com.au) which I thought may be of interest to you. I'm currently looking for Sydney families whose adult children live at home to take part in the series and as somebody whose very active in their local community, I thought you might know a family that fits the bill. I appreciate this is not directly related to community matters and therefor, as an incentive, I'd like to donate $500 to your organisation if you can refer a family to me that we ask to appear on the program (but please talk to the family in question before putting them forward).
The Nest is an exciting six-part observational documentary for SBS that challenges contemporary views about family life in the 21st Century. It explores a growing social trend that sees the age at which people leave their family home steadily rising, and two distinct generations living together under one roof. Attached, is an information pack which outlines who we are, and what the series is about, but please do not hesitate to get in touch with me on the details below if you would like further information, or if you wish to check the sincerity of this email.
Even if you don't have anyone in mind, I'd be really grateful if you could forward this email to friends and colleagues as they may know someone.

Yours sincerely

My name's HONG CAM VU DANG. I'm from Vietnam and I am studying at UTS for journalism course. I am writing this letter to ask you for a help. Thank you for your concern.
I intend to write about "the lives of immigrants in Ultimo area and how can they maintain their original culture for their second, third... generations" for my assignment. Related to my topic, I need to have some statistics about  the percentage of immigrants (Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai...) and interview some immigrants that succeed in training their children (if possible). I do know that you are The Administrator of the Ultimo Society forum and I hope that you will have some valuable information for me. Could you please give me some recommendation or an appointment?
I would much appreciate if you can reply me soon.

Free Wi-Fi in Ultimo Library

Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2008 11:40:28 +1100
Subject: CLOVER'S eNEWS - Friday 1 February 2007 - No. 382

A two month trial of free wireless internet is underway at five City libraries in Glebe, Customs House, Newtown, Ultimo and Haymarket.
Wireless internet technology, or Wi-Fi, enables adequately equipped computers to connect to the Internet without a phone line. The connection can be made publicly available through access points known as "hotspots". The City's trial is providing library hotspots of about 25 square metres.
The trial is being provided by internet service provider, Unwired, the only company that currently provides Wi-Fi with no cost to the user and without large advertising panels. The trial will also enable Unwired to test the service in public libraries. While Wi-Fi is common in public libraries in Europe, it is not used in Australian libraries.
The initial response to the service has been positive. An evaluation of the trial will include the numbers of people using the service and user feedback. If the trial proves to be a success, the City will consider permanent introduction of hotspots in City libraries.

After 3 years of Chairing the Ultimo Village Voice meetings I have recently relocated to Chippendale (with Tony of course!). Therefore it is no longer appropriate that I should continue to Chair meetings or to be a member of Ultimo Village Voice.
Please note that the ultimovillagevoice@gmail.com email address will continue, however, the management of that email address will be undertaken by Yimmy Seifert.
The opportunity to contribute to the local community in which I've lived for these past 9 years has been a privilege I will long treasure, and by personally subscribing to the Ultimo Village Voice email I will continue to take an interest in events in the suburb which for almost a decade has been 'home'.
There are one or two issues whose loose ends I will endeavour to tidy up – such as the Ultimo Pyrmont Section 94 Developer Contributions plan, and the Air Quality Report for the proposed Student Accommodation on Bulwarra Road.

Dear Member
Another year is almost gone, a year of adjusting my life to Parkinson's Disease, and spending all of the remaining time in the two 'jobs' I'm passionate about: on the board of directors of the World Federation of Austrians Abroad www.gangart.com/weltbund and protecting New South Wales' free beaches as the Convenor of Free Beach Action NSW www.gangart.com/freebeach
Although I'm still disappointed that Ultimo did not get a Sauna Centre as per the original plans of my fellow countryman, the late Harry Seidler, but a YMCA style Fitness Centre instead, there's not much we can do about it now. Some of the residents are happy with the pool/gym and I guess one cannot please the entire community.
Other than this, there is no big news to report from our precinct. The Ultimo Society has been quiet, so has the Ultimo Village Voice, but the Ultimo BLOG is alive and well, ready for posts from our members www.gangart.com/ultimo - and even the CityRAGs' archives are still open www.gangart.com/cityrags

Subject: Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre

Dear Member
Recently I had the opportunity to inspect the soon to be opened Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, and also spoke with Claire Barkle, its Sales & Marketing Coordinator.
I must admit, from an architect's perspective the design by the late Harry Seidler is surely stunning and an instant Ultimo landmark. However, it is quite unfortunate that on the inside the ITAC has not become what a good part of the community wanted it to be.
Instead of a European style bath house and sauna centre (focus: relaxation and fun) we've now got a YMCA managed American style fitness centre (focus: lap swimming and gym classes), where a steam room and a small sauna cabin (one only!) are minor features.
Well, I guess one cannot get it right for everybody, but since the ITAC presented a perfect opportunity and was a rather costly exercise, Sydney's residents and visitors alike will now have to wait a long time for a dedicated Scandinavian sauna complex.
Community consultation is just a catch cry...

Gerald,
I'm really sorry to hear that you are so dissatisfied with the ITAC.
I think the community is most fortunate to have such a centre.
I must admit that some of the petulant complaints I've heard lately make me question the wisdom of my actions back in 2004 when I put in a great deal of time and energy working to help the community retain the first-class facilities. One consolation....... There are certainly numbers of people in the area who appreciate what we have at Ultimo.
Entry fees aside, I am delighted with the ITAC.

Subject: Support for a real (nude) Sauna at Ian Thorpe

Dear Chris:
This is Leonie and Chris (Kensington), originally from Germany and living in Sydney now for 7 years. Gerald has indicated that he is pushing for a real, nude Sauna at Ian Thorpe. We used to be regulars in saunas and thermal baths in Germany, where every medium size town has a sauna park, often owned by the local council. Non-nude saunas do not exist in Germany and the simple reason why we have not been to a sauna in Sydney is that it is non-hygenic and entirely uncomfortable to sit there with a swimming cozzy. Needless to say that German saunas are NOT gender segregated (after all, we want to go as a couple and with our mixed gender friends). A typical sauna park in Germany would include a few different temperature saunas plus a medium size plunge pool plus some resting areas (all nude).
If required, we can give you references to a wide range of communal and government owned German saunas (these references will be in German). It is beyond our comprehension why no nude saunas can be found in all of Sydney. If there will be just another textile sauna at Ian Thorpe - we won't go.
Gerald's initiative has our full support. In Germany and other northern European countries this is one of the most common things and we are 100% certain that the northern European Community in Sydney would come in great numbers to use this facility.

Many thanks
Cheers
Chris and Leonie

Ultimo and Pyrmont Buses Needed

CLOVER'S eNEWS - Friday 16 February 2007 - No. 334

I've asked the Minister for Transport to meet with me and Ultimo and Pyrmont residents to push for improved public transport to meet the area's growing needs. Residents tell me that bus services have reduced over the past 20 years, despite the increased population.

Government urban consolidation policies mean the population of the peninsula has dramatically increased since 1996. The population rose to almost 12,000 people in the five years to 2001, an increase of 48 per cent. It is estimated to increase by a further 51 per cent by 2010.

Only 20 per cent of working residents in Pyrmont and Ultimo drive to work, compared with the Sydney average of 50 per cent. Local residents walk or cycle, or rely on public transport.

I have asked the Minister to reinstate the former levels of service on the 501 bus route, following cuts to this service in September 2006. Residents rely on the 501 route bus as the only service that links them to other areas, particularly on weekends.

Ultimo and Pyrmont residents have asked that local bus services be improved by:

  • Rerouting the 441 or 442 bus service to travel via Pyrmont;
  • rerouting the 443 bus service via Sussex and Druitt Streets to provide access to the Central Business District and Town Hall station;
  • reinstating the former weekend timetable for the 501 bus service;
  • increasing the 449 bus to a thirty minute service from 8.00am to 8.00pm weekdays to provide improved links to Glebe and Parramatta Road; and
  • reintroducing the 459 bus service along Pyrmont Bridge Road to provide direct access to inner-west schools and the Fish Markets.

Residents tell me that the Government promised new bus services to replace those redirected from Pyrmont during construction of the ANZAC Bridge. However, there has been no action to redirect the 443 route bus along Druitt Street via the Western Distributor instead of King Street, despite the Minister telling residents that the Government was considering this in 2005.

Action you can take

“... I observed the words Ultimo Place at the bottom of the drawing. I was struck with the oddity of the name, and asked what that could mean, on which the Doctor (John Harris) with an air of the utmost importance, strutted up to me and said, I can explain that to you Madam. I was once summoned to attend a Court Martial, the gentleman in reading the charge happened to say this Court being convened on the 12th ultimo instead of instant; They were not classical but I Madam, being classical immediately perceived the mistake; I ridiculed them and wrote verses on the subject then and afterwards call’d my house Ultimo Place”.

Sydney’s suburban nicknames
It seems nearly every Sydney suburb has a nickname – testament to rivalries past and present. With the help of listeners, Richard Glover’s Drive show has been attempting to catalogue some of them.
