Subject: Season's Greetings
Date: Monday, 11 December 2006 11:26 AM
From: Gerald Ganglbauer <gerald@gangart.com>
Dear Member
The year 2006 seemed to have passed by quietly as far as Ultimo was concerned, but it certainly was an eventful year for myself.
Not only did I complete yet another degree this year (Diploma of IT with Distinction) and was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease at around the same time, the Annual General Meeting of the World Federation of Austrians Abroad www.weltbund.at voted me onto their Board of Directors. This means that instead of lobbying for a few thousand Ultimo residents, from 2007 to 2010 I will look after the interests of half a million expats worldwide and travel a lot overseas.
As much as I would like to continue my work for the precinct with enthusiasm, and my support for the Free Beach Action group www.freebeach.info I cannot do it all anymore for obvious reasons. So this is a call for younger residents to become involved in shaping our neighbourhood and contribute to the community.
I promise I will help as much as time constraints and health allow me to, but the Ultimo Society needs you!
Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year!

Hi,
I was wondering if your community group could help us in letting Pyrmont
community groups know about our Community day.
On Dec 2nd we will be offering all Ultimo and Pyrmont residents a free
Big Ticket to our museum which includes entry to all exhibitions and
vessels.
We will be doing a mail out in November as well as placing some posters
in Community centres.
Is there other ways of letting residents and community groups know about
this event?
Kind Regards

Dear Member
A quiet BLOG is good news for Ultimo as there seem to be no major issues
in our precinct at the moment. The Ultimo Society's ongoing work for
the community must have paid off.
Although I will be overseas for some time, the BLOG remains open.
However, local activists are invited to put up their hands as volunteers
are needed to stand for office. We need to keep our precinct in good
shape. Unfortunately my health does not allow me to do it all by myself
anymore.

This is a tremendous loss but not ALL the building is gone.
The remnants are still heritage-listed and should be incorporated into
any new building.
And PLEASE - can all churches take note - install a sprinkler system!

The
Face of Sydney |
The
Face of Sydney is an innovative photography project funded by the City
of Sydney.
The photographers Karen Donnelly, Raimond Dewerrdt and Tony Nott take
demographic data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and take photographs
of 100 individuals from a select area to match the data. For example,
if 4% of people in an area are girls aged between 5-12 then they will
take four photos of 5-12 year aged girls. All the 100 images are then
merged together to create the "face" of a particular area.
The final images will be projected on Customs House as part of "Art
and About" later in the year.
The four areas that the photographers will be working in, and the locations
for the photo shoots, are:
Haymarket/Chinatown Thursday 27 April
Ultimo Community Centre
40 William Henry Street, Ultimo
Millers Point / The Rocks Friday 28 April
Abraham Mott Hall
Argyle Street, Millers Point
Rosebery Saturday 29 April
SEAHS Physio Clinic
3 Joynton Ave, Zetland
Waterloo/Redfern Monday 1 May
Redfern Customer Service Centre (Basement Area)
Lawson Square, Redfern
The photographers will be available between 8am-8pm on each day. Participants
can turn up at anytime that suits them, there is no need to book.
Anyone living in these areas can come and have their photograph taken
to make up the "Face." All participants will get a free copy
of their portrait as well as the chance to take part in making a piece
of history!

Thanks for taking our comments and suggestions on board regarding littering.
But please don't forget two other very annoying items besides cigarette
butts: chewing gum and shopping trolleys do not belong
onto our streets!

Gerald

SIA
for a Hotelier's Licence at 129 Broadway |

Subject: SIA for a Hotelier's Licence at 129 Broadway
To the Ultimo Society,
Re: Social Impact Assessment for a Hotelier's Licence at 129 Broadway,
Ultimo (Corner of Wattle Street and previously the Copacabana Restaurant)
UrbisJHD has been commissioned to conduct a Social Impact Assessment
(SIA) in relation to a proposed hotelier's licence at 129 Broadway,
Ultimo, to be submitted to the Liquor Administration Board.
The SIA must take into account the likely social impact on the local
community and its residents, the key social issues in the local area
(including those relating to the use of alcohol), and other relevant
information.
We would welcome the input of the Ultimo Society into the SIA process.
We are conducting stakeholder interviews in the week commencing the
20th February 2006. If you wish to arrange an interview time, please
contact either myself or Lucy Phelan on (02) 8233 9900. Alternatively,
you may wish to lodge a written submission by 24th February 2006 for
our consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Jo Manion

Subject: 2006 Household Survey
Dear Member
This week the City of Sydney's 2006 Household Survey was posted to you.
The survey is an opportunity for community input into improving our
local neighbourhood. I urge you to complete the questionnaire and mail
it back by Friday 24 February. Or you can complete it online as well:
http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/laps
I ask this not only because I'm on the front cover photo and the 24th
is my birthday (both is true) but because I believe that it is OUR neighbourhood
for which we all share responsibility.
Oh, and don't forget to write that you belong to The Ultimo Society
at the question asking if you're a member of a Community Organisation.

Subject: Re: Ultimo Armed Robbery
Hi Gerald,
Thanks for your comments. City Central Police are very aware of these
incidents recently. Over the last 6 weeks we have had scarce resources
due to our operational commitments elsewhere. However the next couple
of weeks should see many of our police return to this command which
will help increase patrols and specific operations targeting crimes
like those mentioned.
Please make sure all residents report any incident of crime in Ultimo,
as this is where we can respond with our resources to intelligence based
policing.
Secondly, we do not recommend that any one leave valuables in sight,
"if it can be seen, it can be stolen". It is very important
not to store valuables in vehicles and to never leave vehicle unsecured.
Do not give the thieves the opportunity to commit crimes.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Kristen Neilson

BLOG Weblogs, or blogs, are a way of publishing to the web one idea
at a time. By simplifying the process of publishing, letting authors create
posts easily, and making it simple to link to related ideas on the web,
blogs make it easy to update a website while still making sure your words
retain a clear, personal voice.
The simplicity and immediacy of weblogs has made them extremely popular
in a very short period of time, and theyre being used today by everyone
from media outlets wanting to spread their message to ordinary citizens
wanting to keep in touch with friends and family around the world.
As the weblog medium has evolved, its become evident that the collective
posts which make up the millions of existing weblogs, along with the links
that they provide to each other and to other relevant content on the web,
represent an important new outlet for expression and communication. Best
of all, its easy for anyone with basic internet skills to create
a blog or to add one to an existing site.
Definitions from The Blue Sloth |
...
I observed the words Ultimo Place at the bottom of the drawing. I was struck with the oddity of the name,
and asked what that could mean, on which the Doctor (John
Harris) with an air of the utmost importance, strutted up to
me and said, I can explain that to you Madam. I was once summoned to attend
a Court Martial, the gentleman in reading the charge happened to say this
Court being convened on the 12th ultimo instead of instant; They were not classical but I Madam, being classical immediately perceived
the mistake; I ridiculed them and wrote verses on the subject then and
afterwards calld my house Ultimo Place.
