Hi Gerald
This may be a rather strange request, but I found your site on the net
and thought I would give it a try. In 1966 I attended Ultimo Primary
School, in what would have been either pre-school, or maybe Grade 1.
I am really interested in seeing some pictures of the school because
I have very vague memories of it. I can remember climbing up the side
of a hill and climbing through a hole in the fence with my poor grandmother!.
I remember that time with fondness. We lived in Prymont but I have been
led to believe that there is now a highway going through where our house
was. It was a two story terrace house. I now live in Tasmania but would
love to know where I can find some pictures of that era. Thank you for
taking the time to read this. My name back then was Sue Collins. Kindest
regards Sue Appleby.

Hi Gerald,
I thought I'd mention the newsgroup: aus.culture.ultimo.
This group was started () to discuss Ultimo in particular, and inner-city
living in general.
It is quite an old newsgroup, dating to 1992. A lot of the earlier posting
(found via googlegroups.com) are informative and even mildly profound
(such as the day that Bill Gates, the Pope and Noam Chomsky were all
in Ultimo - although there is no evidence they exchanged pleasantries).
Lately is has been a place for stray trolls and mindless spam.
Maybe it will re-surface.
Thoughtful posts included:

Dear Maria
Yes and no. On the one hand we have the Ultimo Precinct Committee turned
Ultimo Precinct Community Group in August 2003 and reformed as Ultimo
Village Voice (interim name) at my 6 October 2004 meeting. They're here
to fight local issues for local residents.
On the other hand we have my 200+ members' residents network, The Ultimo
Society, with its online publication, The Ultimo BLOG. This is more
of a positive, friendly and informal collaboration within the 2007 postcode
neighbourhood.

Gerald

Dear Paul
I was unfortunately unable to attend the last meeting arranged by Gerald
Ganglbauer but received his mail with news of that meeting and so am
writing to inform you as Actg. Chairman of the Ultimo Village Voice
of the above Development Proposal which has caused my brother and myself
great concern.
The following letters which we have written to the Council officer dealing
with this application should make our feelings clear.
I'm not sure you can do much about it but I think the more people who
are aware of these sorts of proposed development the better.
I will try to get to the community forum in Pyrmont on 1st November
but it may be difficult as we have an overseas visitor with us that
week.
Yours sincerely

Dear Ultimo Resident
I am writing to you as a member of my Ultimo residents network to give
you an update as to what is going on in our precinct.
On 6 October 2004 a meeting was held at the Ultimo Community Centre,
which was instigated by myself as past Chairman of the former Ultimo
Precinct Committee.
It was agreed at the meeting to reinstate an Ultimo community group.
If you are interested in joining this group, subscribe to Ultimo Village
Voice by sending an email to Acting Chairman Paul Hannah, agadoo@ozemail.com.au
However, if your interest in our local area is more that of a friendly
neighbourhood spirit, your thoughts are welcome about networking in
a new informal format: The Ultimo Society. Follow (and add to) the BLOG
at http://www.gangart.com/ultimo
As a subscriber to this list you will occasionally receive email updates
on news on the BLOG. If at any time you want to walk away from it, make

No worries, Marcelle.
Someone just had to bring the community group back.
May I just ask you one thing:
Council sometimes refers in its communication to Pyrmont SLASH Ultimo
residents which makes it look like ONE community (last seen in an ad
for the 1 November LM Community Forum).
Please do not use "Pyrmont/Ultimo" residents but "Pyrmont
AND Ultimo" residents as you do eg with Glebe AND Forest Lodge.
As you are well aware Ultimo
has not much in common with our neighbourhood precinct behind the freeway
barrier. They are two very distinct urban villages. We feel we share
more issues with Chippendale or even Glebe.
I, as an example of a typical Ultimo resident, have daily business in
Chippendale (my POB), Glebe (Broadway Shopping Centre) and Haymarket
(Paddy's Market), several times a week in the CBD - but only a couple
of times a year I ever make it to Pyrmont!
Thanks
Gerald

Invitation to Ultimo Residents
Date: 19/8/04 4:38 PM
Received: 20/8/04 12:53 PM
From: Gerald Ganglbauer, gerald@gangart.com
Dear Ultimo Community Member
For three months since UPC (Ultimo Precinct Community Group) disbanded
itself on 5 May 2004, Ultimo residents have had no representation (except
for the Ultimo Aquatic Centre Action Committee, chaired by Paul Hannah).
Both myself and CityRAGs, the umbrella organisation for all City of
Sydney Resident Action Groups, regret this situation. Even the Lord
Mayor expressed in a letter to me that she would welcome the formation
of an independent community group.
Therefore I am inviting expressions of interest as to who would be keen
to play an active role in reforming a group in our precinct and continue
the work that Bob Walker and I were doing over the past three years.

Press release: reinstatement of Ultimo community group
Date: 7/10/04 2:18 PM
Received: 7/10/04 4:36 PM
From: Paul Hannah, agadoo@ozemail.com.au
On 6 October 2004 a meeting was held at the Ultimo Community Centre,
instigated by Gerald Ganglbauer, a past Chairman of the former Ultimo
Precinct Committee.
It was agreed at the meeting to further the establishment of a community
group to represent residents and interest groups in the Ultimo area.
Subject to agreement by a formally constituted membership it was agreed
by all present to:
1 formulate a Constitution
2 formally agree a name for the community group
3 determine the physical boundaries within which the community group
would represent and advocate for community issues
4 letter-drop within the agreed boundaries to ensure maximum representation
of residents and interest groups, and
5 having resolved items 1 to 4, hold a ballot for the election of office
holders
While the group is in caretaker mode the duties of Acting Chairman,
Acting Vice Chairman and Acting Treasurer will be undertaken by Paul
Hannah, Robert Walker and Yimmy Seifert respectively.
Since the abolition of the Ultimo Precinct Committee in July 2003 the
forum for addressing local concerns has been a series of 'Information
Sessions'. These forums were inadequate to effectively deal with important
issues affecting the Ultimo community (the Cross City Tunnel (CCT),
the CCT emissions stack in Darling Harbour, the Ultimo Aquatic Centre,
and the loss of direct pedestrian access to the City - among other issues).
As a consequence, issue specific groups have addressed these concerns
without a forum to present the issues within an Ultimo-wide perspective.
After an intensive discussion of procedural matters and an exhaustive
overview of the current status of the issues listed above, the meeting
closed on an upbeat and positive note with meeting attendees excited
that they had taken further steps towards the formation of a substantial
new organisation providing a voice for the Ultimo Community.
The next meeting of this exciting new voice for the Ultimo community
will be held on Wednesday 3 November at 6.30 pm. We encourage everyone
in the area to attend. The next meeting will also be an opportunity
to discuss issues which will be raised two days earlier at the Lord
Mayor's Pyrmont and Ultimo Forum.
If we want our concerns to be listened to and addressed we must first
make our voices heard.
Paul
Hannah

BLOG
Weblogs, or blogs, are a way of publishing to the web one idea
at a time. By simplifying the process of publishing, letting authors create
posts easily, and making it simple to link to related ideas on the web,
blogs make it easy to update a website while still making sure your words
retain a clear, personal voice.
The simplicity and immediacy of weblogs has made them extremely popular
in a very short period of time, and theyre being used today by everyone
from media outlets wanting to spread their message to ordinary citizens
wanting to keep in touch with friends and family around the world.
As the weblog medium has evolved, its become evident that the collective
posts which make up the millions of existing weblogs, along with the links
that they provide to each other and to other relevant content on the web,
represent an important new outlet for expression and communication. Best
of all, its easy for anyone with basic internet skills to create
a blog or to add one to an existing site.

I observed the words Ultimo Place
at the bottom of the drawing. I was struck with the oddity of the name,
and asked what that could mean, on which the Doctor (John
Harris) with an air of the utmost importance, strutted up to
me and said, I can explain that to you Madam. I was once summoned to attend
a Court Martial, the gentleman in reading the charge happened to say this
Court being convened on the 12th ultimo instead of instant; They
were not classical but I Madam, being classical immediately perceived
the mistake; I ridiculed them and wrote verses on the subject then and
afterwards calld my house Ultimo Place.
