GANGART AWARDS FOR INTERCULTURAL ARTS ON THE NET 2005 WINNERS ANNOUNCED Since 2001 the Gangart Awards for Intercultural Arts on the Net have searched the world for cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural, cross-platform excellence. The Awards Panel is pleased to announce the winners for 2005: GOLD Bjoern Karnebogen, bjoernk@khm.de Koeln/Cologne (Germany) http://www.adgame-wonderland.de/type/history.html Ever wanted to change history? Now you can! Rewrite medieval European history or Japanese Edo period. The Historic Tale Construction Kit allows you to create your own medieval story using pictures from the Bayeux tapestry. Text, with suitable medieval font, can be added to a background that looks like it would pass any medieval manuscript authenticity test. The Hokusai Manga Construction Kit is based on the Manga drawings from Katsushika Hokusai. The interface is designed completely in Japanese, to make it fit with the images. You can write your message in beautifully hand-drawn hiragana syllables. SILVER Aarnoud Rommens, aarnoud.rommens@gmail.com (Belgium) Ingrid Stojnic and Bert Balcaen, Rekalldesign http://www.camouflagecomics.com "Camouflage Comics: Dirty War Images" aims at producing reflections - both in the form of verbal and visual material - on the interplay between art, dictatorship and human rights in general and the legacy of the Argentine "dirty war" (1976-83) in particular, with a focus on comics. BRONZE Alfred Banze, abanze@web.de (Berlin) Andreas Dettloff, anapat@mail.pf (Papeete) http://www.banyan-project.de Banyan Project is a traveling art festival trough the spreading area of the banyan tree worldwide. 60 artists from over 30 countries participate. Banyan presentations and workshops with children, young people and adults take place in cultural centers, galleries, festivals, museums, universities, but also offroad in bars, studios and just on the street. The banyan website serves as a communication platform for participants. SPECIAL MENTION These sites deserve a special mention: http://www.cremecenter.de Lots of visual arts this year - wonderful to see! Particularly because intercultural arts on the web need not be about the creative dissemination of well-structured information. - Esther Anatolitis http://www.oodlala.net The project - like so many others out there - will evolve and be even more intriguing once additional content will be added by its users. - Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek http://www.derheiligevirgil.de Sylvia Petter's favourite http://www.transcri.be Chris Joseph's choice Congratulations to all the winners and special mentions. We're looking forward to next year's Gangart Awards and invite you to take part in the search for the best intercultural sites. Thanks to Esther Anatolitis, Chris Joseph, Sylvia Petter, Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek for judging - and best wishes and many thanks to all the artists and creators for participating. ABOUT THE GANGART AWARDS We pay tribute to outstanding work, that globally fosters the arts & culture through sites on the Net. They should run well on all major browsers and platforms, download fast, and are beautiful as well as deliver excellent content: literature, (e-books, e-zines), visual art, (galleries as well as individual artists), film, music ... or general (cyber-) culture. An international panel of jurors, assembled by Gerald Ganglbauer, base their decisions on: Content: artistic leadership and expertise of the content provider(s) in each field. Creators of high distinction who have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the international arts and whose life and work continues to inspire us will be considered just as well as young, emerging artists. Code: technical expertise – lean error free code, elegantly written, compatible with all major browsers (Opera, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Communicator – on both Windows and Mac OS), different screen resolutions, reasonably fast access times. Design: userfriendly site development, sensible site architecture and navigation without too much gimmick, presented in beautiful design and created with original graphic elements. No Website-in-a-box or clip art buttons will be accepted. NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2006 AWARDS: http://www.gangart.com/awards/ Nominations will be accepted from arts and community organisations as well as individuals worldwide. Everyone may nominate a site, however, creators need to be contactable through their site. Content must be presented in a minimum of two languages (English being one of them), but not necessarily in parallel text.
